Sparta Rotterdam – The Oldest Club in Holland
The story of Sparta Rotterdam started in 1888, when it was founded, being a cricket club. Sparta is the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. Sparta’s home town is Rotterdam, Spangen. They play in an impressive stadium which is called “Het Kasteel” - The Castle.
In 1890 Sparta started playing football within the Dutch competition. Their first match was against Kralingen, a game they won easily: 6-0. After having played national matches for four years, Sparta wanted to see if they could succeed against an opponent from abroad. In 1893 Harwich & Parkstone FC (founded in 1877) visited “Spangen” to compete with Sparta Rotterdam, a game Sparta lost with a result of 0-8.
